According to a legend, Hanuman scribbled his Ramayana on rocks with his nails as Valmiki was told. Curious, Valmiki questioned Hanuman about it. Hanuman brought him to the cliffs, where he read his works with joy

Reading his own writing made him feel overwhelmed, and he briefly lost his voice. Hanuman enquired as to his problem. In response, Valmiki said that it was so admirable and devoted that his own work, which had taken him 12 years, was nothing in comparison.

Hanuman proceeded to the shore and destroyed it by throwing those rocks into the water while carrying the sage on one shoulder and the rook pile on the other. Valmiki was ashamed and wished he had passed away earlier. Valmiki was comforted by Hanuman, who remarked there was no reason to be depressed. The Ramayan is a tale of commitment and sacrifice; whatever he did was done out of devotion to Lord Rama.
